“Kumkumadi is misused more than anything else we make. People pour it on, expect a change in a week, and give up. It is three or four drops at night, warmed in, with a gentle fomentation afterwards — and it is a matter of months rather than days. It also does not suit everyone: if it brings out bumps or pimples, stop, and speak to me instead of pushing through. Used properly, with the brightening pack twice a week, it is the best thing we make.”
Kumkumadi thailam is one of the oldest named preparations in Ayurveda for the face, and this is made the way it is described rather than the way it would be cheaper.
Kumkuma is saffron. Around it sit haridra, manjishta, chandana, usheera, kushta and yashtimadhu — and ajaksheeram, goat’s milk, which the classical formula calls for and most modern versions quietly leave out.
Twenty millilitres, and it is meant to last. Three or four drops is a full application for the whole face. Used properly a bottle runs for months, which is the only way an oil like this makes sense.
For general brightness and evenness. It pairs with our Skin Brightening Face Pack — the pack twice a week, the oil at night.
Contains goat’s milk, so it is not vegan or vegetarian.
A free consultation comes with every order, and for this one it is worth using. Kumkumadi suits most skin but not all, and it is better to know before you buy.
Kumkuma (Saffron), Haridra, Manjishta, Chandana, Usheera, Kushta, Yashtimadhu, Ajaksheeram (goat’s milk), Coconut oil
At night, on clean skin. Three or four drops — no more. Warm them between your fingertips and press over the face, avoiding the eyes. Then a gentle fomentation: cup your warm palms over the face for a few moments, or press a warm, damp cloth lightly over it. The warmth is part of the method, not an extra. Leave it overnight. It can be used in the daytime as well, though nights are when most people find it easiest. For external use only.
General brightness and evenness of tone, on most skin types. Pairs with our Skin Brightening Face Pack. Not vegetarian — it contains goat’s milk. Speak to one of our doctors first if you are unsure whether it suits your skin.
Patch test on the inner forearm before first use. Stop using it if any pimples, bumps or rash appear — oils suit most skin but not everyone’s, and continuing will not settle it. Use very little. More drops will not work faster; they will only sit on the surface. Avoid the eye area. For external use only. Contains goat’s milk and saffron. Patch test carefully if you react to either. Keep out of reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, which degrades saffron.
